Each unit in 1st & 2nd grade starts by learning about an important contemporary or historical artist. We frequently read from the series Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists by Mike Venezia, but there are a lot of other fun books we read as well!
We meet in the art room with Mrs. Long once a week for forty minutes. Because Mrs. Long groups 1st & 2nd grade for projects, we alternate projects every other year.

Students learn about Georgia O'Keeffe and her large drawings of flowers and other natural materials. Students take inspiration from her large bold shapes and colors. To create their drawings, students "draw" on black paper using clear glue. After letting the glue dry, students went over their drawings with bright chalk pastels. They loved watching their drawing appear through the pastel!

After watching scenes from Cave of Forgotten Dreams, students learned about cave paintings and drawings. Students investigated the reasons for the creation of the drawings in the caves and the materials used by their creators. Students then created their own "cave" drawings by using dried clay as their medium and the bottom of their desks covered in paper as their cave!

After learning about the life and work of Frida Kahlo, students learn how to recognize her paintings. From there, students learn about the proportions of the face by completing a draw-along. Students then use what they have learned to complete a cut-paper self portrait. Flowers, bugs, and other personal items are included in their portraits just the way Frida included them in hers!

Students learn about the life and work of Pablo Picasso and review the proportions of the face. During a guided drawing, students draw an abstracted self-portrait. When the portrait is finished, we color in sections of the face with tempera paint and finish by going over our lines with a black permanent marker.

Wassily Kandinsky: Non-objective Paintings
Students learned about artist Wassily Kandinsky and his "super power" to see a color whenever he hears a sound called synesthesia. Students created circular paintings similar to Kandinsky's most well known painting and tested themselves for synesthesia!
