Each week in kindergarten, we begin by reading a book then we create an artwork inspired by key concepts in that book!
We meet in the art room with Mrs. Long once a week for forty minutes.

For our very first project of the year, we read What Makes A Rainbow and learn the colors in the rainbow and their special order. We practice by playing the rainbow game and each of us makes an object for each color in the rainbow. We arrange our drawings by color to make a collaborative rainbow!

Students start by reading Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh to learn about primary colors and how to mix them to create secondary colors. We learn how to use a paintbrush and watercolor paints during this lesson. When we are done painting, we use colored dots and play the color mixing game. We also watch OK GO's Three Primary Colors music video to have even more fun practicing!

To reinforce our knowledge of primary & secondary colors, we read Ain't Gonna Paint No More and have a good laugh. After, one lucky student lays down on a large paper to be traced. Each student then dips each of their hands into a different primary color and places their print on our figure. After the primary color prints are made, students rub their hands together to mix their primary colors together to make a secondary color. We add one more secondary print, cut out our figure, and hang them in the hall for all to see!
