This intermediate level course spends the first semester focusing on ceramics and the second semester focusing on sculpture. These media based semesters help us focus on specific methods and tools used in each of the media.
We meet in the art room with Mrs Long once a day, during 4th hour, for about 40 minutes. These courses only meets on EVEN years and is part of a rotating elective schedule.

After watching the first episode of NBC's Making It, students were inspired to create their own "inner beast". Students chose materials that reflected characteristics of their personality while simultaneously representing themselves as an animal. A light-hearted competition led to students choosing one of their peers to win the coveted inner beast patch!

Ceramics
Students begin with a large, solid brick of leather-hard clay. Students slowly remove material until they achieve their desired subtracted design. A major focus of this assignment is making the final design appear to have NOT been constructed from the original solid brick of clay. During this project we also work heavily on the planning process and thinking about the final sculpture in the round before beginning the carving process.

Students again begin with a large, wet sphere of clay. Students are asked to pinch material to mold it to the shape of their desired design. Students are prompted to not add any material, but rather mold what they have into the desired form. Additionally, students are discouraged from subtracting material if possible.
